Energy is the single most common reason people take shilajit, and the marketing leans hard on phrases like mitochondrial resuscitation and 40 percent more ATP. The actual human evidence is quieter and more specific. The best study points to fatigue resistance, not a stimulant hit, and the dramatic energy percentages come from animal and test-tube work rather than trials in people. This page separates the two.

Fatigue resistance, not a stimulant
The most defensible human result on energy is a placebo-controlled trial at a US university in recreationally active young men. Over 8 weeks, shilajit helped them hold on to muscular strength under fatigue, and it lowered a marker of connective-tissue breakdown. The key word is retain. The men were not stronger overall, and shilajit did not act like caffeine. What it did, in the more fatigable subgroup, was slow the drop in performance as they tired. That is a recovery and endurance signal, not a burst of stimulation, and it is a genuine independent trial, which is why it earns a moderate grade rather than a preliminary one.
In an independent placebo-controlled trial, 500 mg per day for 8 weeks helped recreationally active young men retain muscular strength under fatigue and lowered a connective-tissue breakdown marker, a fatigue-resistance signal rather than a raw strength gain. [Keller 2019, JISSN] Moderate evidence
This is the honest headline for shilajit and energy. It is not that you will feel wired within an hour, but that over weeks you may tire a little less quickly under load. It is worth noting that this was a single trial and the clearest effect appeared in one subgroup, so the finding is meaningful but not yet confirmed by other labs. Users who report a benefit tend to describe exactly that pattern: steadier daytime energy and fewer afternoon crashes emerging over a few weeks, rather than an immediate lift. A large share of people, though, attribute what they feel to placebo, to caffeine taken alongside it, or to general lifestyle changes, and a meaningful minority notice nothing at all. Those reports are anecdotal and easily confounded, so treat them as context, not evidence.
The muscle gene study, kept in proportion
A smaller study is often blended into energy claims, so it is worth placing correctly. It looked at gene activity in human muscle after 8 weeks of shilajit and found changes in a cluster of collagen and connective-tissue genes. That is biologically interesting for recovery and adaptation, but it measured molecular activity in 16 people with no placebo group. It shows a plausible mechanism, not a measured improvement in energy or performance, and it should not be quoted as if it were a strength result.

Where the mitochondria and CoQ10 claims come from
The most quoted energy claims, that shilajit resuscitates mitochondria and raises ATP or CoQ10 by large percentages, do not come from a human trial. The main source is a study in rats using a chronic-fatigue model, in which shilajit reduced fatigue behaviour and supported mitochondrial function. That is a legitimate animal finding and it explains the mechanism people talk about, but it has not been shown in people. The specific figures for boosting ATP or CoQ10 in humans trace to marketing and to non-indexed papers rather than to any published human randomised trial, so we do not repeat them as fact.

Government guidance draws the same line. The energy, stamina, and endurance claims are not backed by reliable human evidence, and most of the research is in animals.

What the research does not support
- A stimulant-style energy hit. The human trial showed fatigue resistance over weeks, not an immediate lift.
- The 40 percent more ATP and mitochondrial resuscitation claims in humans. These trace to animal and test-tube work and to marketing.
- Shilajit raising blood CoQ10 in people. No human randomised trial shows this.
- Treating gene-expression changes as proven performance gains. The muscle gene study measured biology, not output.
The realistic expectation is modest: over 8 to 12 weeks, a possible edge in tiring less quickly under exertion, rather than a daily energy surge. Judge it by how you actually feel over that window, and buy only purified, third-party-tested material.
